Site information: Amsterdam This site is devoted to the Overtoom and it's surroundings.
The Overtoom is one of Amsterdam's busiest streets, as it is one of the few main roads leading from the ring (circle A10) to the city heart - the Leidseplein. Until one hundred years ago the Overtoom was open water, a canal, with streets on both sides as you can see on this old b&w photo. Now a tram travels in the middle lane. Behind the camera position stretches the famous Vondelpark, very popular to both Amsterdam citizens and tourists. In these live pictures one has a good view on a tram stop (lines 1 and 6), traffic and traffic lights. If you're lucky you can see people get on and off the tram! Opposite this location one can see several shops and living quarters. The shop with the red sign is a pharmacy (Staring), on the left ( corner Jan Pieter Heijestraat) an optometrist, on the right corner a sportswear shop (Asahi), and directly in front Fabricati for modern furniture and gifts. The Overtoom is part of the neighborhood called "Oud West" ("Old West").
